It was Mark Twain who famously said: "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."
Ditto, apparently for Corktown Tavern on Michigan Avenue in Detroit.
Eater Detroit initially reported Tuesday that the "popular neighborhood bar and music venue on Michigan Avenue, appears to have quietly closed this week. A tipster says that a member of the management team was inquiring about job opportunities at other restaurants in the area on Monday. Today the bar was closed during regular business hours and the phone went unanswered."
But later that day, Eater posted a Twitter feed from the bar:
Hello Everyone, Just to clarify any questions about the bar, Corktown Tavern is NOT closed, we have temporarily closed for cleaning and repairs. We will re-open March 11 for regular business. All booked shows will be honored. Join us for Parade Day Sunday, March 13th, Featuring: The Muggs, The Beggars, The Reefermen and The Howling Diablos.
A person who answered the phone on Thursday, who was helping clean up for the upcoming St. Patrick's celebration, but declined to give her name, told Deadline Detroit that the rumors of the closing were spread by a "disgruntled" ex-manager. "We've been here 30 years and we're not going anywhere," she says.
As for the closing rumors, she adds: "It's just a bunch of bullshit."
Mark Twain couldn't have said it better.
