What is oozing from the Towne Club pop factory?
The Free Press looks at a "dark, rusty, oily-looking liquid" that neighbors say is killing grass and seeping into a storm drain near the bottler at 8 Mile and Mt. Elliott on Detroit's east side.
(The liquid) appears to be oozing from behind a fence on the site of the Intrastate Distributors Inc. factory, the Towne Club pop distributor. The liquid stains the adjacent sidewalk, leaves a wide area of missing grass in the median, and is visibly flowing into a storm drain on Mt. Elliott.
City inspectors on Thursday said they believe it's spilled diesel fuel from over-filling of above-ground tanks at the company. But (Detroit resident Aaron Thomas says this was no one-time incident.
The story goes on to say the owners promised to contain the spill, but still gave the Freep a "no comment" and hung up the phone.
The storm drain into which the fluid is leaking goes to the Water Resource Recovery Facility in southwest Detroit, and is treated for pollution. But we bet Willy Wonka never had this problem.
