Animal advocates see a rise in dog-snatching locally, Detroit News crime writer George Hunter reports.

“You hear these stories again and again, and they all start to sound familiar,” said Jennifer Seidl, head of “Bully’s Angels,” an Oakland County-based rescue organization for pit bulls, which are the most commonly stolen breed this year. “These thieves go right into people’s yards and steal them. Then they sell them on Craigslist.”

“This is happening quite a bit in Hamtramck,” Seidl said. “It’s actually happening in quite a few cities. . . . "Sometimes they can sell them for quite a bit of money, depending on the breed.”

Hunter speaks with Police Chief Max Garbarino of Hamtramck, who says:

“It does happen, and people need to be aware and watch their dogs when they put them outside. I know the animal rights people have complained that there have been a bunch of these thefts recently.”

A 26-year-old Hamtramck pet owner tells the reporter her Australian Silky Terrier was snatched early this month.
