As eyes look to Rome for the start of the secret conclave of cardinals Tuesday, a pressing question comes to mind: Where is Detroit's red hat?

The last four men to lead the Archdiocese of Detroit became cardinals, and three of them voted for the last three popes.

But Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron, 64, in place since 2009, has yet to receive the scarlet cap -- the biretta -- that signifies a prince of the church.

Will the new pope award a biretta to the 10th cleric to lead Detroit Catholics, first recognized as a diocese by the Vatican in 1833?
