Richard "White Boy Rick" Wershe Jr. enters court

A Detroit judge Friday opened the door for Richard "White Boy Rick' Wershe Jr.'s possible release after nearly 28 years in prison for a drug trafficking conviction.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Dana M. Hathaway set a resentencing hearing for Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. Wershe is serving a life sentence. The judge could resentence him to time served and let him go.

Wershe, clad in prison garb, and sporting a shaved head, showed little emotion, and was escorted out of the courtroom by sheriff's deputies.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office opposes the appeal, and assistant county prosecutor Tim Baughman asked the judge to stay her decision while the office appeals her ruling. She denied the stay.

Wershe's attorney, Ralph Musilli, is pleased with the ruling, saying she based it on sound legal grounds. "She did a good job."

Darlene McCormick, Wershe's mother, attended the hearing and said afterwards: "I just have good vibes. I think things are going to get better than him."
