William Melendez
When ex-cop William Melendez was seen on a video on TV beating on motorist Floyd Dent during a traffic stop in January, residents didn't realize they'd be paying for his rogue behavior.
Because the city is broke and recently agreed to an out-of-court settlement with Dent for $1.37 million, Mara MacDonald of WDIV reports, the taxpayers will get pinched.
Homeowners will be assessed 6.45 mills in the summer to pay for the settlement, WDIV reports.
Dent’s attorney said the settlement is structured so the city has time to pay, the station says. Dent is expected to be paid in full by next June.
Officer Melendez was fired after the incident and charged criminally in the case. He was recently ordered to stand trial on assault-related charges. Two other cops were suspended.
