The family of former pitching sensation Mark (The Bird) Fidrych has filed a wrongful death and product liability lawsuit over his 2009 death, at age 54, while working on a dump truck at his Northboro home.
Fidrych, the American League Rookie of the Year in 1976 as a 21-year-old star for the Tigers, died from accidental asphyxia by suffocation in 2009 after his clothing became entangled in the power takeoff shaft of his 1987 10-wheel Mack dump truck, according to authorities.
Such shafts are typically used to transmit power from a tractor or other source to mowers, choppers and other equipment.
