While police looked at two men Thursday who are suspected in the carjacking the Rev. Marvin Winans, other Detroiters told the Detroit News the incident highlights the danger ordinary citizens face daily.

"We should be able to go into gas stations without being assaulted," community activist Bernice Smith, who lives on the city's west side, told the News. "People are scared to go outside anymore."

Police helped identify two men police say were involved in Wednesday's assault and carjacking of  Winans at a CITGO gas station at Linwood and Davison on the city's northwest side. They also recovered the SUV on Thursday afternoon.

The attack on the 54-year-old pastor, founder of Perfecting Church on Nevada Street on the city's northeast side, made headlines around the country. In Detroit, it renewed calls for security measures at late-night stores and raised questions -- again -- about how few cops patrol the streets.

Winans was hit in the face, kicked and robbed of $200, a gold wristwatch and his 2012 purple Infiniti SUV while pumping gas. Four men were involved, police said.
