For sports fans, a season is often about expectations.

The TIgers started the season as if they were invincible. Then the team unraveled and those expectations created pain.

The Lions season began with high expectations. But early on it became evident that fans might need to adjust their expectations. Now, that is really clear.

Bob Wojnowski writes about what a mess the Lions are in after Sunday night's 24-12 defeat against the Denver Broncos.

It's ugly and getting uglier. The Lions came home hoping to find their offense and stem their slide. Instead, all their ills and spills were on graphic display, and suddenly this is a team flirting with disaster.

If there was a mistake to be made or a flaw to be exposed, the Lions obliged in a 24-12 loss to the Broncos Sunday night. They were in it until midway through the fourth quarter, when the next three series ended like this: Matthew Stafford fumble, inexplicable special-teams blunder, Stafford interception. . . .

The Lions are 0-3 with a trip to Seattle next, but before they can even think of salvaging their season, they have to salvage their quarterback. And their running game. And their confidence.

Mitch Albom of the Free Press writes.

It was a night to forget on a national stage, a night when the city hoped its much heralded football team would turn the tide of two ugly losses and celebrate its home opener with a major victory.

Instead, all the nasty traits of this early Detroit Lions season were bared against the Broncos. Penalties. Interceptions. Bad blocking. Dumb plays. Come on. When you get called for an illegal formation on a field-goal attempt, you're going out of your way to look bad.

Autumn, awful. The first official Lions game of the fall already feels like deep winter. At 0-3, they'd be bucking the greatest of odds to see the playoffs this season. And next week it's the defending NFC champion Seahawks — in Seattle.
