One minute she was dancing, the next moment she was fatally shot.
WWJ reports that Adaisha Miller, who would have turned 25 today, was dancing at a Detroit party early Sunday morning with off-duty Detroit cop Issac Parrish when she hugged the officer and his holstered-gun around his waste discharged.
She was taken taken to the hospital where she died.
At a press conference today, Detroit Police Chief Godbee offered "our sincerest condolences" to the family of the woman.
Godbee explained that Parish was having a fish fry at his home and was carrying the gun in a holster around his waiste. He said Miller was dancing behind him and touched the officer's waiste and the gun discharged. Godbee said officers have the option of carrying a gun while off-duty.
He described it as a "very tragic and unfortunate incident, but nothing intended at all," according to a video of the press conference posted on Fox2.
"There is absolutely no indication, number one, that the officer placed his hand on his weapon at all," Godbee said, adding that the officer had been placed on administrative restrictive duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
The woman’s mother, Yolanda McNair, questioned why the officer had his gun at the party.
“She didn’t have to die,” McNair said, according to WWJ. “All he had to do was do what he was supposed to do, and be fair.”
