It'll be the first bike rack ever placed right on Woodward Avenue -- right on the roadway.
It might even be the first ever allowed on a state trunk line anywhere in Michigan, Bill Laitner of the Free Press reports.
"We're not sure, but we think so," Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Rob Morosi said.
For fans of transit alternatives in metro Detroit, the rack means a lot more than a dozen loops of steel planted in pavement.
Soon to be installed in Ferndale in what's now a parking place in front of Howe's Bayou restaurant, the rack is a symbol of even bigger changes due on Woodward. It's also a signal that state highway engineers are changing the way they approach road designs and metro Detroiters are changing their transportation options.
