If Ronald Reagan were alive today and strollling through the First National Building in downtown Detroit, he might just say: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this ceiling." Or, he might more appropriately say that to Dan Gilbert.
Curbed Detroit reports that, as part of the Dan Gilbert revolution downtown, work has already started at the First National Building to make room for Papa Joe's Gourmet Market.
Curbed reports that Bedrock Real Estate Services, a Gilbert company that owns the building, has "kicked off renovations by tearing down the ceiling we're familiar with, which was covering up the building's original plaster ceiling." The store will occupy about 15,000 square feet.
The grocery store opening is envisioned for late 2013 or early 2014, Curbed reports.
A Bedrock news release says:
"The concept for the new store is a little different than the typical Papa Joe's. In addition to everything available at Papa Joe's suburban locations, the downtown location will also include delivery and table service for gourmet pizza, pasta, Thai food, sushi as well as a full liquor license."
