Detroit Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown will resign from office Monday to become Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr's deputy, WXYZ reports.
Brown was elected to city council in 2009. He made it clear last month that he would not seek reelection for a second term.
Brown, a former deputy police chief, won an $8.4-million lawsuit from the city after he was inappropriately fired by then-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in 2003.
As a council member, Brown has been outspoken about the city's need to fix structural budget deficits and address long-term debt challenges.
