It's easy to get swept up in the rosy narrative about the comeback of Detroit, about the nice housing and pricey restaurants cropping up in Midtown, downtown and Corktown.

But the old narrative that can be forgotten is the ongoing gun-violence in the city and impact on the victims, physically, psychologically and financially.

WXYZ reporter Aaron Baskerville and his crew step back from the daily reports of gun violence to produce a compelling and emotional, short documentary, "Beyond the Bullet."

Donahvan Gray

The film takes a look at the victims including 9-year-old girl India Williams, who was shot at age 7 while riding a bike. She is now paralyzed in a wheelchair. Another person in the film is 26-year-old Donahvan Gray, who was shot five times during a gas station robbery in March and now walks with a walker.

It's a heartbreaking look at what has become far too common of a tragedy in the city. It's also a compelling reminder of the trail of damage shootings leave behind for both victims and family.

In 2015, Baskerville notes there were 1,280 shootings in Detroit, including 245 homicides.
