Some kind of sophisticated system to help make Detroit gas stations safer is under consideration by the city, Mayor Mike Duggan indicates without giving details yet.

"A new high-tech system that includes exterior cameras and lights, and a quick link to a law enforcement center," is being discussed, Crain's reports in its latest issue.

"We want to use technology to fight this and make gas stations zones of safety," Duggan is quoted as saying at the annual Techonomy conference last week. "The response from gas station owners is very positive."

Duggan expressed concern at the conference over a recent escalation in gas station crime in the city, particularly at night. He said he meets periodically with gas station owners, and safety is one of the key topics they discuss.

Details about the system haven't been finalized. . . .

"The mayor and the gas station owners are on the same page as far as improving safety, and we are working toward an effective solution that works for our business owners, as well as the city of Detroit and the community," the mayor's office said via email.

"The issue the mayor mentioned at Techonomy is very early in the process at this point, and we likely will have something more to say on this a bit later."
