We've heard from so many media outlets that Detroit has 50,000 stray dogs loose within its borders. The problem was so bad, Detroit Dog Rescue's Hush once said 50,000 was a conservative estimate, that the real total could be as high as 100,000 strays.

Yesterday, we learned that the World Animal Awareness Council's census of Detroit's strays yielded an estimate of about 3,000 strays living in the city.

But that was yesterday. As a service to our readers, visiting media, and animal lovers everywhere, we will periodically ask the question: Are there 50,000 stray dogs In Detroit today? If and when legitimate research offers a different answer from the World Animal Awareness Council's count, we will tell you.
