A broken water main under Jefferson Ave. opened up a massive sinkhole downtown that is not only a traffic menace, but it also affected utility service.

Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department managed to get the water shut off, but concrete and dirt from the collapsing area had fallen onto other sewer and power lines, including those that supply the Renaissance and Millender centers, Mariners’ Church and possibly the municipal building, Cross said. Utility companies have been working to shore up their lines, but crews backed off much of the work late Monday so the soil in the area could be tested to determine if it can sustain the weight of the heavy equipment needed.

Efforts to repair the sinkhole have closed two lanes on E. Jefferson, Randolph between Jefferson and Larned, as well as surrounded sidewalks.
