Tis the season, but sometimes it's hard to have faith in mankind, particularly when you're an atheist.

The Macomb Daily reports that an atheist group says vandals have damaged its banner on display in Warren to counter a 67-year-old nativity scene.

Freedom From Religion Foundation members said the 7 ½-by-3 foot banner on in the median of Mound Road, at Chicago Road was found on the ground Sunday morning and a pole was bent. The sign says: “At this season of the winter solstice, let reason prevail. There are not gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth & superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

“It shows you how insecure some people are in their beliefs,” Douglas Marshall, 67, a member of the group told the paper Tuesday.
