Mark Bernstein: "I'm more interested than I've ever been."

Politics isn't exactly foreign to the offspring of attorney Sam Bernstein.

Richard Bernstein, one of the sons who worked for the Southfield firm, had been elected at one time to the Wayne State University Board of Governors. In 2014, he was elected as a justice to the Michigan Supreme Court.

His brother Mark Bernstein, the current front man for the family dynasty, is on the University of Michigan Board of Regents, an elected position, and is now exploring the possibility of running for governor in 2018 as a Democrat.

Bernstein is “taking every step necessary” to set up a possible run for governor in 2018, he says Thursday.

Bernstein is at the Mackinac Policy Conference to meet business and political leaders and gauge support, writes Jonathan Oosting of The Detroit News

“I’m more interested than I’ve ever been,” Bernstein tells Thet News. “I’m more serious about this today than I was yesterday, so to speak. There is, I think, significant and sustained support from many stakeholders in this process, many of whom are here.”

He'd join a field that includes former state Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer, past Detroit Health Sirector Abdul El-Sayed and former Xerox executive Bill Cobbs. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel has also expresses interest.
