In the social media era, what happens on the island doesn't necessarily stay on the island.
Posts from the second full day of the Detroit Regional Chamber's Mackinac Policy Conference focus mainly on speeches, panel discussions, posturing by would-be governors and stunning vistas from the Grand Hotel. There also are items about costly coneys, tempting pastries and early cocktails.
It is a resort island, after all, as this Thursday sampling shows:
- "Excuse me Mackinac, is this a $12 dollar coney dog!?" -- Eric Thomas, Detroit marketing executive
- "The ice cream social is barely over and they're setting out the cocktails at 3:30." -- John Gallagher, Detroit Free Press reporter
Something about the Grand Hotel makes living a healthy life vs giving it up for 24/7 mini-desserts seem like a valid & difficult choice.

Beautiful morning on Mackinac Island. But I'm anxious to be home where the real people (not politicians) live. pic.twitter.com/jc8x0LQYCu
