Metro Detroit's already crowded grocery scene is getting a little more packed, according to Michael Martinez in the Detroit News.

Superstores Meijer Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., along with traditional grocers such as Kroger, Hiller's, Busch's and Whole Foods, are expanding across the region.

Grand Rapids-based Meijer plans to open two stores in Michigan this year, including its first store in Detroit by late July to early August; Wal-Mart recently opened a store in booming Novi; Busch's, Hiller's and Whole Foods are opening stores; and other grocers are remodeling and expanding product lines in existing stores.

Target Inc. plans to muscle its way into the fray by adding 10,000 square feet of grocery space at each of nine Metro Detroit stores. The stores will sell everything from tomatoes and carrots to USDA Choice beef and baked goods.
