A federal grand jury and FBI are probing Detroit Public School officials and the state's Education Achievement Authority, which was created to address failing schools, particularly in Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reports.

John Wisely and Ann Zaniewski of the Free Press report that the probe is focusing on money paid to companies for apparel, sports equipment and other items as well as former and current officials, documents show. The paper reports the probe began more than 16 months ago.

Subpoenas released today also show investigators seeking records related to former chancellor John Covington, former chief of staff Tyrone Winfrey and a handful of former principals including Kenyetta “KC” Wilbourne, who told the Free Press last week that she cut a deal to plead guilty to bribery and tax evasion as part of the FBI probe of kickbacks.

The EAA is a controversial district created by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2012 to reform Michigan’s lowest performing schools.

Among the companies named in subpoenas are Futures Education, a company with offices in Dearborn that provided support services for special education. The district told investigators that it didn’t have invoices for more than $740,000 from the company
