Attorney General Bill Schuette

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, who fought unsuccessfully against same-sex marriages, is now trying to overturn federal guidelines to protect rights of transgender students.

Lorri Higgins of the Detroit Free Press reports that Schuette has joined a lawsuit filed by a group of states seeking to overturn the guidelines established by the  U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice in May for guidance to school districts. The most most controversial guideline urges schools to allow transgender students to use the restrooms and locker rooms that align with the students' gender identity, the Freep reports.

Schuette issued a statement on Friday saying he joined the lawsuit because it seeks to protect the "dignity and privacy" of all Michigan students, the Freep reports.

"Every child in every school must be provided with dignity, privacy, respect and safety," Schuette said.
