Matthew J. Schneider, the top deputy to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, has been named interim U.S. attorney for Detroit.
Schneider, a former federal prosecutor, is among 17 federal prosecutors around the country appointed with interim status Wednesday by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The post had been filled by interim U.S. Attorney Daniel Lemisch, who stepped in after Barbara McQuade departed.
President Donald Trump removed all the U.S. attorneys, including McQuade, who had served under President Barack Obama, and had 300 days to fill the positions. If he hadn't done so by today, federal district court judges could could have picked prosecutors.
Permanent U.S. Attorney's are nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Schneider is likely to be nominated by President Trump for the permanent position.
