Mayor Dave Bing said Friday Detroit can't handle big events by itself anymore.
Meanwhile, police are working to deter gangs who might be planning to cause trouble at this year's fireworks, and will ask the City Council to pass an emergency curfew to stave off any problems.
The city will pay for policing and public works costs for this year's Target Fireworks on June 25 and with help from several Metro Detroit law enforcement agencies. But Bing said that grant won't be available for next fiscal year's fireworks and Thanksgiving Day parade, a Detroit tradition since 1924.
"This arrangement is not sustainable beyond 2012," Bing said at a press conferenc. "The city's financial situation no longer includes the costs for these regional events."
