Buddy's Pizza, which began selling square pizzas out of its original location at Six Mile and Conant in Detroit in 1946, may expand regionally and beyond.

The pizza chain, which has 12 stores in the Metro Detroit area, announces Wednesday that it is partnering  with CapitalSpring, a New York investment firm, to recapitalize the company and explore growth. Terms are not disclosed.

Chief executive Robert Jacobs says in a news release that CapitalSpring has "substantial restaurant expertise."

“We are thrilled to support the Buddy’s team and look forward to working together to grow the brand over the coming years,” says Erik Herrmann, managing director at CapitalSpring, founded in 2005. It invests solely in restaurants.

Buddy's plans a 13th location at the Detroit Zoo this spring.
