In 2008, Calexico, which serves California-Mexican style grub, won an award for best New York City street food. The chain now includes three food carts and four restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
"We’re still out there slinging tacos and burritos on the streets of New York, only now instead of one cart we have a small fleet -- and a few restaurants to boot," the company website says. "Nobody is more surprised by this development than we are.
Adrienne Roberts of Crain's Detroit Business reports that the New York City-based restaurant chain plans to open inside the One Campus Martius building in downtown Detroit next Thursday, Aug. 11. The space had been the site of Olga's.
Crain's originally reported Calexico's planned to open in March.
Randy Dickow, owner of the new franchise, is no tranger to the food business.
He also co-owns the Lunchtime Global, Freshii Detroit and Sweet Lorraine's Fabulous Mac n' Cheez in the Renaissance Center, Crain's reports.
