A Detroit Police officer who was shot in the head and wounded while responding to a domestic dispute call on Sunday night on Detroit's west side was taken to a hospital 7.3 miles away. The ambulance passed up two closer facilities.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig is distressed, he tells Fox 2's Roop Raj.
"I'm troubled by this. As I begin to learn more I become more and more troubled because I feel like something's not right here," Craig says.
The Rapid Response EMS, a contracted ambulance company, arrived within 90 seconds and transported the 14-year veteran cop to Oakwood Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn, a Level Two trauma center. The ambulance skipped Henry Ford Hospital, a Level One trauma center 4.8 miles away from the scene and Sinai Grace, another Level Two hospital 5.1 miles away.
The officer remains in critical condition. His partner fatally shot the suspect who had opened fire during the response to the residence.
