The murder rate may have fallen in Detroit in recent years, but there are still far too many. There were 302 last year.

Mayor Mike Duggan thinks we should start looking at murders like we do hospital deaths, trying to determine what happened and what could have been done to prevent it, Kim Kozlowski of the Detroit News reports. 

As the former CEO of the Detroit Medical Center, he made the suggestion Wednesday before faculty, researchers and students Wednesday at the University of Michigan.

“Does anybody back up and say, ‘Could we have prevented that murder?’ ” said Duggan, an alum of U-M undergraduate and law school.
