Detroit police have released the 24-year-old man who was arrested Sunday in connection with the fatal shooting of Andres DeJesus at Sunday’s annual Cinco de Mayo parade, Katrease Stafford reports in the Free Press.
Sgt. Michael Woody told Stafford the man was released Monday.
“There’s still an investigation ongoing, and our package has been submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review,” Woody said.
WXYZ-TV reported charges are not likely because the suspect, whose name has not been released, had a permit to carry the weapon and was protecting a family member who was being assaulted.
DeJesus,19, died of a gunshot to the chest, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police halted the parade, a huge event in heavily Hispanic southwest Detroit, after the shooting.
Maria Miller, Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman, said the matter is under investigation and prosecutors “asked Detroit police for further work.”
