The politicians are moving out of Dearborn's old city hall and the artists are moving in.
The city recently negotiated the purchase of the former ADP building on Michigan Avenue for the new city hall at a price of about $3.2 million, Mayor Jack O’Reilly said Tuesday.
The sale is pending final approval by council, which in March gave O'Reilly authority to enter into a purchase agreement on the property. O'Reilly said he expects the sale to go through because the price is less than what he was authorized to spend.
Although several things still have to be worked out, O’Reilly said he anticipates the move would be completed sometime in 2013.
"This is a good thing, but we'll have detailed information sheets at the meeting tonight to explain more of the details," O'Reilly said.
The purchase represents O’Reilly’s vision of turning City Hall into a more efficient, customer-service oriented operation and it was made possible by a confluence of circumstances.
Artspace Projects Inc. is interested in converting the current 90-year-old City Hall building to a live-work space for local artists. In March, City Council approved a letter of intent to sell to the nonprofit developer contingent on a 180-day due diligence period.
