Oakland County oncologist, Dr. Farid Fata, who is serving a 45-year prison term in a South Carolina federal prisonfor the many evil things he did to his patients, and for defrauding Medicare, is out of sight, but not forgotten.
U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday that a website has been set up with information and claim forms for compensation, according to Oralander Brand Williams of the Detroit News. An $11.7 million restitution fund has been set up for former patient’s out-of-pocket expenses. People can also call the toll-free number, 1-877-202-3282.
Federal prosecutors have identified about 553 victims but say there could be many more. Many patients were given expensive chemotherapy treatments when they didn't have cancer or it was no longer beneficial.
“It is our goal is to take all of this money that we recovered from Dr. Fata and return it to the victims in some way,” said McQuade, according to the News. “I know that they really want is for this never to have happened and to have their health completely restored and their trust in doctors restored. We can’t do that, but we’re doing everything we can to take his ill-gotten gains and share it back with the victims so that they can at least offset some of their out-of-pocket expenses.”
