A man convicted of murdering Marcel Jackson, one of the city's most well-known anti-crime crusaders, was sentenced Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court to life in prison, the Detroit News reports.

During sentencing, Judge Craig Strong told convicted killer Cari Bruner that the slaying was "shocking, outrageous and more than sad," reported Oralander Brand-Williams of the Detroit News.

"It's a senseless killing of a man who was loved by his family ... who was trying to do the right thing."

Bruner and Michael Lawson were convicted last month in the killing of Jackson, a father of six, who was a member of the crime-fighting community group Detroit 300, the News reported.

He was shot to death while working as a security officer at the downtown Detroit night club, Pandemonium.
