The Detroit RiverFront Conservancy, which maintains a 5.5-mile stretch of the RiverWalk between Belle Isle and Cobo Center, requires visitors under age 18 who are on the property past 5 p.m. to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The conservancy says it hasn't been actively enforcing the policy, but Detroit police have been asking young people for identification.

The curfew, posted on signs on RiverFront property, has sparked complaints from some who say the rule is confusing and discourages people from enjoying the RiverWalk. The curfew for youth in the city of Detroit is 10 p.m.

Officials appeared not to know who asked for the enforcement.

Conservancy spokesman Marc Pasco told the Detroit News he doesn't think the conservancy reached out to Detroit police. And a police spokeswoman said the conservancy did ask police for help.
