"Tragic" and "unfortunate" are just a couple words that come to mind when you hear of a Detroit police official ending up in court as a defendant.

WXYZ reports that Bill Rice, the ex-head of the Detroit police homicide section, and his girlfriend appeared for a preliminary examination Monday in 36th District Court in Detroit on 16 felony counts including mortgage fraud, running a criminal enterprise, and possession of drugs with intent to deliver.

The station reports both are charged with giving false information to get federal funds for mortgages.  -- A.L.
