Over the past decades, places like Borders and Barnes & Noble became community gathering spots. They gained a role as part of our culture.
By the end of 2010, Borders had closed all its outlets. And Barnes & Nobles continues to shut stores. The latest is at 19221 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe.
The suburban store is set to close in January. Jim Lampassi, vice president of real estate development at Barnes & Noble, tells Sarah Rahal of The Detroit News in an email that they're trying to find a new location in Grosse Pointe.
"We had discussions with the property owner in hopes of agreeing to an extension of the lease, but unfortunately we were unable to come to an agreement," Lampassi says.
