What do you get for the person who has everything? If that person is Dan Gilbert, it's just best to let him buy himself a downtown building. Earlier this month, he closed on eight-story tower at 1400 Woodward.
Crain's Detroit Business: The building at 1400 Woodward is located on one of the downtown blocks that Gilbert, the founder and chairman of Rock Ventures LLC and Quicken Loans Inc., plans to transform with "core urban shopping," such as home retail, fashion and restaurants with his place-making plan.
A Detroit Historic Designation Advisory Board report posted on the city's website says that 1400 Woodward was constructed as the T. B. Rayl & Co. store, which sold sleds, ice skates, mantle pieces, tool chests and cutlery.
The building currently houses the Eastern Wig & Hair Company on the ground floor.
