Denny McLain

I always thought former Tigers pitcher Denny McLain -- for all he had going for him -- had a self-loathing problem. Whenever things were going good, he found a way to screw it up.

It was as if deep down he felt he didn't deserve goodness, even though in my dealings with him as a reporter he was always charming.

It's good to see that he's lost about 156 pounds.

The Detroit News reports that McLain told WWJ's Roberta Jasina that he lost the weight, the result of of bariatric surgery he had done last June. He said he did it so he could help care for his wife Sharon, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

He wants to get down to his playing weight when he was under 200 pounds.

McLain told WWJ that he dropped 24 pants sizes, plus a shoe size.

“Well, I don’t know if I’ve ever looked good naked,” McLain told Jasina. “But, you know, for the lack of a better term with no further explanation, I’m much more acceptable. And, by the way, I’m seeing things now I forgot I had!”

“I had the fattest feet in Michigan; I had gorilla feet,” he told Jasina. “I mean, put hair on my feet I’d look like King Kong.”
