Janee Ayers

It took a while, but they did it.

The Detroit City Council on Tuesday finally selected a replacement for Saunteel Jenkins, who took a job with the The Heat and Warmth Fund.

The choice is Janee Ayers, 33, an elected vice president of the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO.

"I have a genuine passion and concern for the City of Detroit," she said during an interview with 7 Action News earlier this year.

In all, 137 people applied, WXYZ says. The council interviewed 16 of those applicants before selecting Ayers to fill the vacancy.
