A Detroit cop has been suspended without pay after being indicted in Wayne County on Monday. Authorities charge that he knew about a murder plot and not only did nothing to stop it, but then lied to police during the investigation, Fox 2 reports

The cop, Elijah Lately, 25, is charged with two counts of lying to a police officer during a violent crime investigation. The charge carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

Authorities allege that Lately knew about a plan to kill Brandon Rice, who was a witness in a case. Rice was murdered on Elmhurst in Highland Park on April 23.

"The evidence is going to show that this police officer not only had knowledge of a murder that was going to take place but he actively undermined the investigation," Wayne County assistant prosecutor Robert Moran said in court Monday, according to a report by Fox 2's Amy Lange.
