A Detroit police officer, responding to a barricaded gunman Wednesday night, remains in critical condition, The Detroit News reports.
The 25-year-old officer, father of a nine-month-old baby, has been on the force for nearly two years. His father is also a Detroit cop.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m.
Police received a call from someone they believe to be the suspect indicating he had just assaulted his wife at a home in the 5500 block of McDougall, First Assistant Police Chief LaShinda Stair said, according to Mark Hicks and George Hunter of The Detroit News.
Another call, possibly from a daughter, suggested the 43-year-old man was armed and appeared to have had a mental breakdown.
As scout cars pulled up, officers spotted a man outside who appeared to have a weapon and “took a stance whereby he was ready to fire a shot," police tell the News. Then the man fired, hitting the officer inside a patrol car.
The gunman remained in the home until he was forced out by tear gas and arrested.
