The number of homicides in Detroit through six months is 153, a drop from the same time in 2012, when there had been 167 homicides, according to the Police Department.
Gina Damron reports in the Free Press that as of June 30, the city saw decreases in aggravated assaults, burglaries, rapes and auto thefts compared with the same time frame in 2012. There were increases, though, in nonfatal shootings — 564 as of June 30, up from 543 during the same time last year. There also were increases in robberies and larcenies, according to police.
Deadline Detroit reported earlier this week that despite the drop in murders, Detroit's 153 homicides is only one less than New York City's 154 homicides through June 30, and New York has 7.6 million more residents.
WXYZ-TV reported Thursday that a Detroit jogger was shot multiple times and carjacked on the northwest side.
