A rendering of new restaurant on Caucus Club Facebook page
The upscale Caucus Club on Congress in the Penobscot Building was once a fixture in downtown Detroit, and a particular magnet for lawyers at lunch time. Eventually, it began to look and feel outdated, and it declined in popularity. It closed in 2012.
Mark Kurlyandchik of the Detroit Free Press reports that after many delays, restaurateur George Sboukis, whose family owns Loui's Chophouse in Chesterfield, plans, if all goes well, to reopen the historic restaurant before Christmas.
"This process has taken all of two years just to get where we are now," Sboukis, 45, tells the Freep. "I'm anxious to get back to the restaurateur role and stop project managing, because I'm exhausted."
Sboukis tells the Freep he plans to put his own stamp on the 155-seat restaurant, modernizing the concept while paying homage to the past.
