A Detroit middle school principal has imposed sweeping discipline for cafeteria mayhem after a food fight broke out.
"Middle school students will not be served lunch during the week of Nov. 5 through Nov. 9," says a letter to Bethune-Fitzgerald Middle School parents that principal Melissa Scott issued after a lunchtime fracas involving 175 students last Friday at the northwest Detroit school. Students can bring lunch from home.
Lauren Podell of WDIV spoke to a grandmother, Christine Houston, who sees the punishment as too harsh.
"Don't take food from a child," she said. "And when the lady told me today, she says, 'Well, they're just going to miss lunch.'"
WDIV found one parent dropping off fast food Monday after her son called home.
"He said, 'Well, I need something to eat because they're not serving any middle schoolers lunch," Carpenter said. She hand-delivered her son's lunch on Monday, but said the penalty should teach the students a lesson.
"This is the punishment for the middle schoolers having a big food fight during lunch. Then maybe next time they will think twice before they throw away their food," Carpenter said.
