Former Dr. Farid Fata

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit says dozens of victims of evil cancer specialist Farid Fata haven't yet applies for part of the $11.9-million restitution fund set up for victims, the Detroit Free Press reports.

U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade urges claimants to come forward before an Oct. 5 deadline, Tresa Baldas reports.

Fata, 51, pleaded guilty to Medicare fraud and misdiagnosing and mistreating cancer patients. He often gave patients unnecessary chemo treatment. The former doctor is serving 45 years in prison and is currently housed at the Williamsburg Federal Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison in South Carolina.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has identified 553 victims, but notes there could be plenty more given that Fata's practice treated 17,000 patients through seven locations, Baldas writes.
