Friday morning article:
EMU apparently has tolerant, forgiving boards members, judging from a report by Kim Kozlowski in The Detroit News.
Susan Martrin, president of EMU since 2008.Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin is expected to get an extension on her contract Friday, in spite of recent troubles with alcohol consumption, a university official close to the issue said Thursday.
The EMU Board of Regents will hold a special meeting at noon today to vote on Martin's contract, which ends in July. It's expected the eight-member board will extend her pact, the official said on condition of anonymity.
Martin, who became the school's first female leader in 2008, got a written board warning last year to immediately control her public drinking or face dismissal, Kozlowski writes.
The letter . . . mentioned inappropriate behavior in April 2012 with an alumnus in Washington, D.C., that included alcohol and profanity and alluded to other incidents.
Martin responded in writing seven weeks later. She said she apologized to the alum. She also apologized to the regents for her "un-presidential behavior" and promised it would never happen again. . . . When the letter became public in July, Martin promised to get counseling.
