Former Gov. William Milliken, a Republican who was perhaps one of the more beloved Michigan governors, is crossing party lines to endorse a Democrat in a Congressional race, the Detroit Free Press reports.
It's not the first time for the Traverse City resident who served as governor from 1969-83.
In this case, he's endorsing congressional hopeful Gretchen Driskell, a Saline Democrat, in her bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, writes Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press.
Milliken said voters in the 7th Congressional District will have the opportunity to choose a candidate who will find a "constructive way to fashion solutions to the challenges we face as a state and a nation," the Freep reports.
In the past, Milliken backed Democrat Jennifer Granholm in 2006 for governor and Democrat Mark Totten, who ran against and lost to Attorney General Bill Schuette and Democrat Gary Peters for Senate. He's also backed Republican Rick Snyder for governor and Republican Sen. John McCain in his presidential bid.
