Swallow at least one bite of a pączek today or people who enjoy 'em will judge you. That may seem harsh, but tradition matters.
So as a public service, here's a roundup of Metro Detroit fried dough boulder ball nuggets:
- Three types of Girl Scout cookie pączki are $4.95 each at New Order Coffee Roasters, 3100 Woodward Ave. in Midtown. Flavors are akin to Samoa, Thin Mint and Tagalong flavors.
- Another $5 mash-up is at American Coney Island, 114 W. Lafayette Blvd. downtown. It's "a bizarre but beloved franken-food," Melody Baetens writes at The Detroit News of the coney pączki — a hot dog with chili, mustard and onion inside one of those sugary belly bombs. Baetens describes it as an "unholy mix of sweet and savory."
- "Share your paczki selfie with us," suggests WXYZ, which will post some online and show a few on newscasts. 'Post your photo to Twitter or Instagram and use the hashtag #PaczkiSelfie. "You can also email your picture to sendit@wxyz.comsendit@wxyz.com with "PaczkiSelfie" in the subject line.
- Ale Mary's Beer Hall in Royal Oak is among spots touting gluten-free vegan varieties.
