The FBI is joining the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Environmental Protection Agency in what has been described as a preliminary investigation into the Flint water crisis to determine if any laws were broken.
Paul Egan of the Detroit Free Press reports that Gina Balaya, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit, told the Free Press Monday that federal prosecutors are “working with a multi-agency investigation team on the Flint water contamination matter, including the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, EPA's Office of Inspector General and EPA's Criminal Investigation Division."
Egan writes:
The disclosure of the FBI's involvement in the investigation comes as the U.S. House Oversight Committee prepares to hold its first hearing on the issue Tuesday, amid reports that former Flint emergency manager Darnell Earley will decline to testify.
Andy Arena, the former head of the Detroit FBI, who heads the Detroit Crime Commission, is helping spearhead a separate investigation, along with Royal Oak attorney Todd Flodd, on behalf of state Attorney General Bill Schuette.
