Wiretaps and secret videos don't always guarantee a federal conviction, but they can help prosecutors.

A court filing by the U.S. Attorney's Office on Thursday indicates that the FBI has gathered secret video recordings, a "significant number" of wiretaps, text messages and other evidence against former deputy Detroit Police chief Celia Washington, who is accused of pocketing bribes, Robert Snell of The Detroit News reports.

The defense wants extra time to review the materials. Washington, scheduled for trial Dec. 19, was the legal adviser for the police force.

She was indicted last month on charges that she took bribes in exchange for helping an unnamed towing mogul grab a bigger piece of a Detroit towing industry that totaled more than $2 million a year. She denies wrongdoing.
